Former Barcelona defender and Andorra owner Pique was suspended for two months after a referee row

Former Barcelona defender and current FC Andorra owner Gerard Pique was suspended for two months on Wednesday after a heated argument with a referee.

The 39-year-old businessman, who retires from playing in 2022, was embroiled in a row after Andorra’s 1-0 defeat to Albacete in the second division last week.

Referee Alonso de Ena Wolf wrote in his report after the match that Pique, together with other members of Andorra’s staff and playing team, confronted the officiating team.

The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee said Pique had been «suspended for two months for infamous and public acts that undermine sporting dignity and decorum, based on the facts recorded in the referee’s report.»

In addition, the committee also banned Pique for “six matches for acts of mild violence towards the referees”.

Andorra president Ferran Vilaseca was handed a four-month ban, while sporting director Jaume Nogues and several other members of the club’s staff were also banned.

Ena Wolf said Pique told him to “leave with an escort so no one attacks you” after he complained about referee decisions made during the match.

“In another country they would beat you up, but here in Andorra we are a civilized country,” Pique added, according to Ena Wolf’s report.

The referee said that after getting into their vehicle to leave, Nogues told the officials, «I hope you have an accident.»

Pique said on social media last week that the club had previously sent a letter to the federation asking Ena Wolf not to referee matches.
