Former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel announces retirement after shoulder injury

Former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel announced his retirement on Wednesday due to a serious shoulder injury.

The 39-year-old Dane, the son of goalkeeping great Peter Schmeichel, injured his shoulder in February during a Europa League match for Celtic against Stuttgart.

The following month he underwent surgery to save his career, but to no avail.

«When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will end my career as a professional footballer,» Schmeichel told the Danish television channel TV2.

“It’s a decision that was made for me after consultation with several surgeons, specialists in the area of ​​my shoulder, who told me not to expect to come back and play at the highest level.

“It’s not fun, it’s definitely not the way I wanted to end my career, but then again, everything comes to an end.”

Schmeichel has had a remarkable career, representing his country 120 times, placing him fourth on the all-time list for Danish internationals, nine caps and two places lower than his father.

After coming through the youth academy at Manchester City, Schmeichel spent most of his career at Leicester, where he was part of the team that stunned the football world by winning the Premier League in 2016.

Five years later he also won the FA Cup with Leicester and after a short spell at French club Nice, he ended his career in Scotland, winning the league in successive seasons with Celtic.

His father was widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time and helped Denmark win the European Championship in 1992.
