Haiti is not at the World Cup to make up its numbers and will be looking for a first-ever tournament victory that could help the country progress to the next round, coach Sebastien Migne said on Friday.
Despite Migne’s optimism, Haiti remains an outlier in Group C as the country prepares to meet Scotland in Boston on Saturday before facing five-time world champions Brazil and Morocco, semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup.
As far as Migne is concerned, his players simply have to score more than their opponents.
“I hope we can be one of the surprises of the tournament,” Migne told a press conference. «I look at football as a game and in the end there is a loser and a winner. If we want to win games, we have to score goals no matter who we face.»
The Grenadiers are playing in their first World Cup since 1974, where they lost all three group matches. They also enter the tournament as the second-lowest ranked team, only ahead of New Zealand. “1974 was our very first goal, but it was 52 years ago,” Migne said. «Today it’s a completely different story. We have qualified again 52 years later and now we have to score again to gain qualification for the next round.»

«When we see our opponents (in the group), we have to go one step further. If we want to make history, get a first-ever win and have a chance to qualify, we have to score goals regardless of the opponent.»
Haiti plays Brazil next week before taking on the Moroccans on June 24.
“Maybe my players are less known, but I say the most important thing is the mark you leave behind,” Migne said. “We hope that we can leave our mark on this competition by the end of the tournament.”
