Germany lost for the first time in a penalty shootout at a FIFA World Cup after being surprised by Paraguay at the Boston Stadium on Monday.
In the four previous shootouts in 1982 (against France), 1986 (against Mexico), 1990 (against England) and 2006 (against Argentina), Germany emerged victorious.
Paraguay, who had won their only previous World Cup shootout in 2010, turned the tables against Germany after heroics from goalkeeper Orlando Gill as the South American nation won 4-3.
In fact, Germany had also not lost in three of their penalty shootouts at the European Championships.
