Japan’s Mitoma is a major doubt for the upcoming FIFA World Cup

Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma is a major doubt for the 2026 World Cup after being ruled out of Brighton’s final two Premier League matches of the season.

Mitoma suffered a hamstring injury during Brighton’s 3-0 win over Wolves last weekend.

Japanese national coach Hajime Moriyasu will announce his World Cup squad on Friday.

Mitoma’s absence would be a major blow to Japan’s hopes of progressing past the last 16 for the first time. The winger scored the winner in Samurai Blue’s 1-0 win over England at Wembley in March.

«As far as the World Cup is concerned, I am not sure yet. We will contact the Japanese federation,» Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said on Thursday.

“We really have to be patient with this injury, we cannot give a clear schedule.

«He will miss our two games. That’s sad for Kaoru. He was in good form and had a big impact on our performance.»

Japan begins its World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on June 14 in Arlington, Texas.

In group F, the country also faces Tunisia and Sweden.
