Jurgen Klopp is closing in on a job in Germany after DFB talks

The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Saturday that it was close to an agreement with Jürgen Klopp to make him the new national coach of Germany.

However, before the 59-year-old returns to the sidelines, the DFB said it still needed the approval of his current employer, the Red Bull Group.

“DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke had a first in-depth conversation with Jurgen Klopp in New York on Friday about his possible appointment as national coach,” the DFB said in a press release.

“During this constructive discussion, agreement was reached on the main points of a possible contract.

«Discussions will continue next week. Both parties are confident that negotiations, subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull, can ultimately be brought to a successful conclusion,» the statement said.

Klopp is the DFB’s favorite candidate to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany’s last-16 World Cup elimination in a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.

The German is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the sport, following brilliant spells at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Klopp stepped away from management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and has since worked as head of global football for energy drinks brand Red Bull, overseeing a multi-club network that includes clubs from Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan.

Last weekend, Klopp said he was “more than recharged” after his break from the front line of football.

Since winning the World Cup in Brazil 12 years ago, Germany has suffered two consecutive group stage exits, followed by the latest disappointment in North America this summer.
