Konate is close to a new deal with Liverpool and is keen to maintain ties with Real Madrid

Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté has said he is close to signing a new contract with the Premier League club, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. The 26-year-old France international, who joined from RB Leipzig in 2021 for a reported fee of £36 million, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Konaté was a key part of Arne Slot’s side, forming a strong defensive partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk. During his time at Anfield he won the Premier League, two League Cups and the FA Cup, and finished runners-up in the Champions League.

«There are a lot of things people have said, but we have spoken with the club for a long time and we are close to an agreement,» Konaté told reporters after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday.

“I think everyone wants that as quickly as possible, but we are in a good place.

«There is certainly a good chance that I will be here again next season. This is what I always wanted.»

«I’m waiting for the contract to be sorted out, but when it’s all done you’ll have to ask Richard Hughes what I told him in September and November, before all the speculation. He’ll say something to quiet everyone down.»

The current season ends unsuccessfully for the defender, with Liverpool eliminated from the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup and sitting fifth in the Premier League with five games remaining.

«It’s been a bad season by Liverpool standards. If we finish in the top four we won’t be happy,» said Konaté. «It’s a great club and a great family. This club means so much to me.»
