Lionel Messi scored for Cristian Romero to break another FIFA World Cup record during the Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt in Atlanta on Tuesday.
This was Messi’s ninth assist at the World Cup, moving him past Argentine legend Diego Maradona for the most assists.
The 39-year-old opened his account for assists in this edition against Egypt. Before that, Messi set up three goals in 2022, against Croatia, the Netherlands and Croatia.
At the 2018 World Cup, Messi had two assists, both in the round of 16 defeat to France. He had an assist in each of the three World Cups before that (2014, 2010 and 2006).
This makes him the first player to assist a goal six times at the Football World Cup.
The former Barcelona star now holds the record for most assists and most goals. He also added to his goal tally on Tuesday, firing the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
