Neymar announces retirement from international football

Brazil’s all-time top scorer, Neymar Jr., announced his retirement from international football on Sunday.

The decision comes after the South American country exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-2 defeat to Norway in the round of 16.

He scored the only goal of the match for Brazil from the spot in the 10th minute of extra time, taking his international tally to 80 goals in 130 appearances, in addition to 59 assists.

«I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I ended here. It’s over now,» he told reporters after the game.

Neymar’s fitness was a talking point ahead of the quadrennial tournament, but despite those concerns he was included in the 26-man squad by head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

With Brazil, Neymar won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and an Olympic gold medal on home soil three years later.
