Egypt defeated Australia 4–2 on penalties to advance to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in almost a century, with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the winning penalty.
The match went to extra time after a Mohamed Hany own goal in the second half canceled out Emam Ashour’s early opener for Egypt.
Egypt will play against Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round.
