Ruben Amorim says Manchester United’s mistakes will make him a better coach at AC Milan

New AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim said he made mistakes during his time as manager at Manchester United but that will make him better at his job.

Speaking in his first press conference since taking over from Milan, Amorim admitted there were things he did wrong during his ill-fated 14-month spell in the Premier League, which ended when he was sacked by United in January.

“It’s hard to explain the mistakes because that would require me to explain the whole context of the last adventure,” Amorim said.

“All I can say is that I learned a lot and made some mistakes.

«I haven’t had the chance, and I’m sorry, to say something to the Manchester United fans. I’m really proud to have been their coach for a year during that time.

“But now history is different. There are many things I could have done better in the last experience, but sometimes it is like that. You have to learn to find the right place to reach another level and that is my thought here.”

Amorim was appointed United coach in November 2024 following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, but struggled to turn his fortunes around with a 15th-place finish in the Premier League table and a loss in the 2025 Europa League final to Tottenham.

Although ranked sixth at the time of his dismissal, Amorim still faced heavy criticism for his 3-4-3 tactical model, as well as his limited use of academy players.

“Everyone learns from their experiences,” said the 41-year-old Portuguese coach.

«I’ve learned a lot. I’ve made some mistakes. There’s some things I’ll try to change and there’s some things you’ll never change. But I think I’ll be a better (coach).»

Amorim oversaw unwanted club records at United, including most losses in a Premier League season and lowest points total.

He has signed a three-year contract to replace Massimiliano Allegri at Milan.
