Running to Waynesboro (Day 67)

I woke up this morning, eager to get to Waynesboro for my day zero tomorrow. The sunrise from the overlook was as beautiful as the sunset last night, and I was glad I got up in time to see it. After yesterday, I need a break both mentally and physically. Unfortunately, I still had 16 miles to go to Rockfish Gap for my shuttle ride. I had planned to be a few kilometers closer, but yesterday’s disaster delayed me.

Running to Waynesboro (Day 67)

The friendliest trail town

I walked quickly, hoping to reach the gap before 2 p.m. Waynesboro is sometimes referred to as the “friendliest trail town,” and at recent trailheads, lists of locals who will shuttle you for free have been posted. These people had volunteered to take hikers to and from Waynesboro, on their own time, without compensation – a huge kindness.

When I finally reached Rockfish Gap, I immediately headed to the popcorn truck in a nearby parking lot. I was told that this is where the shuttle drivers usually pick up hikers and that you can get snacks and drinks while you wait. I sat down to drink a Coke and talk to a local who had lived near Waynesboro all his life. He owned a nearby farm and told me about his life and family. In every town I visit I imagine what it would be like to live there. It’s good to learn it first hand.

Rest and Relaxation

I booked a room at the Quality Inn, my first solo hotel room since I started the trip. It felt like a luxury. I spent the rest of the day eating snacks, doing laundry, showering, and just relaxing. Doing almost nothing felt so good.
