Mohamed Salah called on Liverpool on Saturday to rediscover their attacking identity after a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa put their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League at risk.
Villa climbed to fourth place with 62 points from 37 games and sealed Champions League qualification by edging out Liverpool, who have 59 points. Salah, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, expressed frustration at the club’s inconsistent season and called for a return to the aggressive style that previously brought success.
«I have watched this club go from doubter to believer, and from believer to champion. It took hard work and I have always done everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that,» Salah wrote on X.
«To suffer another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want Liverpool to get back to the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to a team that wins trophies.»

«That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that must be restored and preserved forever. That is non-negotiable and everyone who joins this club must adapt to that.»
Klopp’s playing style
Salah was referring to the style of play under former manager Jurgen Klopp, who delivered Liverpool’s first Premier League title and led the country to three Champions League finals, winning the trophy in 2019.
The 33-year-old forward has not had the same relationship with manager Arne Slot as he did with Klopp. In early December, after being left out for the third time in a row, Salah accused the club of «throwing me under the bus» and suggested his relationship with Slot had broken down in a public flare-up.
Slot later tried to play down the rift, but the episode underlined how tense things had become during the season as Liverpool’s title defense faded.
«Winning a few games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a lot to me and my family,» Salah added.
“I want to see it succeed long after I have moved on. As I have always said, qualifying for next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”
Liverpool hosts Brentford on the last matchday of the season. With a Champions League spot still up for grabs, Slot’s side are four points ahead of Bournemouth, who have a game in hand.
