Shenandoah National Park! (Day 69)

The same kind lady who picked me up two days ago drove me back to the trail today. Almost immediately, the AT entered Shenandoah National Park. I’m not sure if there was a big sign or something, but I must have missed it.

Purchase of permits

I only realized where I was because there was a sign reminding hikers to obtain a backcountry camping permit. Somehow, in all my free time yesterday, I had forgotten to do this. I stood in the middle of the trail for a few minutes, scanned the QR code, and hurriedly purchased mine.

No plans

Today was nice and I walked without direction or plan. I only saw two day hikers and two other hikers all day. I didn’t know where to plan to camp. There was only one official shelter and campground in the first 20 miles of the park, and it was located too early for me to stop there for the night.

First night alone

I walked until dusk approached and found a dispersed spot right next to the trail. It seemed unlikely that anyone would join me and I was right. I set up my tent and prepared for my first night camping alone. Surprisingly, I wasn’t as nervous as I expected. It was a quiet night, with only a few noises that made me open the door to my tent and look outside. I saw someone sneaking up on me, but I think they were more curious than anything else.
