A union representing about 2,000 food and beverage workers at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium said it had reached a tentative contract agreement with Legends Hospitality days before the start of the World Cup.
Unite Here Local 11 said the agreement includes major wage increases, restrictions on subcontracting, limits on new automation technology and privacy protections regarding employee accreditation for major events.
The union said the deal also gives workers the right to strike if it determines in good faith that activities by ICE, Border Patrol or other federal immigration authorities in the workplace will endanger the safety of workers during a World Cup match. The union described the provision as unprecedented.
Workers will vote on Wednesday on whether to ratify the agreement. Full details of the contract are expected to be released after the vote.
The contract expires on April 30, 2028, joining more than a hundred other concession contracts for stadiums, hotels and airports that will expire two years before the Los Angeles Olympics, the union said.
“These workers are heroes,” Kurt Petersen, co-president of Unite Here Local 11, said in a statement. “If federal immigration authorities endanger the safety of workers, our members have the right to quit their jobs. That is now in their contracts.”
The U.S. will play Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium, which will be called Los Angeles Stadium during the tournament, in the first of eight games to be held at the venue.
