The France-Iraq 2026 FIFA World Cup match at Philadelphia Stadium was temporarily suspended due to heavy rain and approaching severe storms.
The digital giant screen in the stadium advised spectators to leave the arena and go to the concourse for safety.
The players and officials had already moved to the dressing room at half-time, with France leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappé.
«A 30-minute break has been announced. FIFA will follow the safety protocols established by local authorities, and the match will resume as soon as it is safe to do so,» FIFA said in a statement.
Although football matches are not disrupted during rain, heavy spells and thunderstorms can still cause the match to be stopped.
After the suspension, play can only resume if no lightning is reported within a 30-minute period, according to rules set by US state authorities.
If the weather does not permit, the match between France and Iraq could even be postponed and completed on Tuesday if weather conditions improve.
These rules cannot be overruled by FIFA.
