Argentina have confirmed top place in Group J at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following Algeria’s victory over Jordan on Monday.
Argentina has six points after two rounds and none of the other three teams in the group can now finish above the South Americans. While Algeria or Austria can finish with six points, Argentina has the head-to-head advantage over both teams.
Earlier, Lionel Messi scored a brace as the defending champions beat Austria 2-0 on Monday to seal their place in the knockouts. Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in their opening match, again thanks to a hat-trick from the 38-year-old.
On June 27, it will face debutant Jordan in its final group match.

Argentina, top of Group J, will face the team that finishes second in Group H, consisting of Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
The match will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the city where Messi currently plays his club football.
