Cape Verde’s Deroy Duarte scored against Argentina in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Miami on Friday.

The 26-year-old midfielder latched onto a pass from captain Ryan Mendes before firing a shot into the net in the 59th minute to level the match at 1-1.

Duarte was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and was capped by the Dutch at youth level, through the U18s, U19s and U21s. However, he opted to represent Cape Verde in senior football and has been capped 36 times since his debut in 2022.
