Who is Mostafa Shobeir, the Egyptian goalkeeper who saved Messi’s penalty in Round 16?

Lionel Messi missed his second penalty of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir diving to his left to deny the chance during the Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt in Atlanta.

This was Shobeir’s second penalty save in this World Cup, after blocking a penalty from Iran’s Mehdi Taremi during the group stage. He is only the fourth goalkeeper, and the first African, to save two penalties in a single World Cup edition.

However, the penalty save was not his only contribution. Shobeir denied Alexis MacAllister and Julian Alvarez from close range to keep Egypt ahead in the first half.

Shobeir has been playing for Egyptian side Al Ahly since 2020 and has made 63 appearances for the club. He played 14 times for the national team.

He is the son of Ahmed Shobeir, who played for Egypt in the 1990 World Cup. He was influential in Egypt, securing two draws in the group stage, against the Netherlands and Ireland.
