Who will be the referee in Brazil vs Scotland at the 2026 World Cup?

Brazil and Scotland will both look to secure a place in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, with the two sides facing off in their final group stage match in Miami on Wednesday.

Scotland come into the match on the back of a 0-1 defeat to Mexico, while Brazil defeated Haiti 3-0 to record their first win in this edition of the tournament.

Who will be the referee for Brazil vs Scotland in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Mexican referee Cesar Ramos will be the referee in Brazil vs Scotland at FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ramos has been a full international referee for FIFA since 2014, but made his debut in the Mexican second division in 2008. This will be his third FIFA World Cup, having taken charge of three matches during the 2018 edition and four matches during the 2022 edition.

It is notable that he was in charge of the semi-final between France and Morocco in 2022. The 42-year-old regularly takes charge of games in the Mexican first division.

The Mexican has also refereed at three different Club World Cups and was in charge of two matches during the 2018, 2024 and 2025 editions, most notably the final of the 2018 edition.

Ramos has a bad history in Brazil and Morocco when it comes to controversial calls.

At the 2018 World Cup, Brazil filed an official complaint against Ramos after the first group stage match against Switzerland, which ended in a 1–1 draw. The South American side claimed that a foul had been committed – on Joao Miranda – in the build-up to Switzerland’s equalizer and that a penalty, following a foul on Gabriel Jesus, was not awarded in their favor.

In Qatar 2022, Morocco’s denial of penalties during the semi-final against France also led to the North African country filing a complaint against Ramos.

However, Ramos has a big reputation in Mexico as he will be the referee who will officiate most World Cup matches from his country when he takes the field for Brazil versus Scotland. He already officiated a match at the 2026 World Cup between Iran and New Zealand, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
