Belgium were forced to make a last-minute change to their starting line-up during their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Spain in Los Angeles on Friday.
Hans Vanaken came into midfield for Youri Tielemans, who suffered an injury during the warm-up before the match.
The extent of the injury was not confirmed by the team, but the player was seen on the team bench after kick-off. The 29-year-old midfielder is a central player in the Belgian midfield and it was thanks to his brace that Belgium overturned a 2-0 deficit against Senegal in the Round of 32.
Tielemans’ injury caused further problems in the team’s midfield, which Andre Onana already lost in the previous match against the United States due to a knee injury.
Vanaken, who plays for Belgian side Clube Brugge, started the Round of 16 match against the United States and provided an assist and a goal. He also set up another goal during Belgium’s 5–1 win over New Zealand during the group stage.
