Canada had a great chance to take the lead when Richie Laryea went down in the penalty area after a challenge from Khuliso Mudau.
During the challenge, several Canadian players approached the referee and asked for a penalty kick. However, their request was ultimately rejected.
What happened?
Laryea burst into the penalty area along the left channel and just before his cross into the center he found himself sandwiched between Mudau and Thapelo Maseko. Laryea went down after a touch on Mudau, prompting raucous penalty kicks from the Canadian fans, players and coach Jesse Marsch.
The referee, Joao Pinheiro, had a conversation with the VAR and ultimately ruled that it was not a penalty.
More to follow.
