Why is the referee wearing a special shirt during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Tunisia and Japan?

Tunisia and Japan will seek their first wins of the tournament when they face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F match at Monterrey Stadium on Saturday.

Tunisia are bottom of the group with zero points after being defeated 1-5 by Sweden, while Japan managed to keep the Netherlands at 2-2 thanks to a late equalizer.

Why is the referee wearing a special shirt and badge during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Tunisia and Japan?

The match between Tunisia and Japan will be officiated by Romanian Istvan Kovacs, who has been a FIFA-approved referee since 2018.

He, along with the other match officials, will wear a special shirt as they will be in charge of the 1,000th World Cup match since the tournament began in 1930.

The special shirt designed by Adidas features gold stripes down the sleeves and a ‘Match 1000’ patch. The referees for the match were presented with the shirts by FIFA Chief Referee and Chairman of the FIFA Refereeing Committee, Pierluigi Collina, himself a former referee.

The match will also be the first time Kovacs takes charge of a World Cup match.
