Why isn’t Guillermo Ochoa in the starting line-up for Mexico versus South Korea at the 2026 World Cup?

Guillermo Ochoa was left out of Mexico’s starting line-up for the 2026 World Cup against South Korea in Guadalajara on Thursday.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper is appearing at his sixth FIFA World Cup, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only players to achieve the feat. However, Mexican head coach Javier Aguirre has opted to start Guadalajara goalkeeper Raúl Rangel ahead of the 153-cap veteran.

Ochoa has played just 135 minutes for El Tri since March 2024 and has largely been used as a selection option. Now in his 22nd year as a professional, he last played for AEL Limassol in the Cypriot First Division.
