Why was Manuel Ugarte stretched off the pitch in the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Uruguay and Spain?

Manuel Ugarte was stretchered off the pitch with an injury during the first half of the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Uruguay and Spain in Guadalajara on Friday.

The midfielder had to be replaced by Nicolas de La Cruz after what appeared to be a serious knee injury suffered during Spain’s opening goal of the match.

The Manchester United midfielder appeared to be in pain as he covered his face with elbows as he was taken off the pitch by paramedics.

Uruguay is yet to win this World Cup after drawing its group stage matches against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. The team needs a win against Spain to guarantee passage to the round of 16.
