Why was there a minute’s silence before the kick-off of the Spain-Belgium match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The second quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway as Spain took on Belgium at the Los Angeles Stadium on Friday.

Before kick-off, players from both teams stood shoulder to shoulder around the center circle and observed a minute’s silence.

The gesture was intended to pay respect to the people who died during the recent forest fires in Almeria, Spain

Twelve people died, while 23 people were reported missing in what was said to be the region’s «most destructive fire.»
