Achraf Hakimi, who is on trial for rape, is part of the PSG Champions League matchday squad

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, who is on trial for alleged rape, was included in his team’s matchday squad for the second leg of the Champions League play-off stage against Monaco on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, it was announced by Hakimi’s lawyer and a French prosecutor that the PSG and Morocco right-back will stand trial for raping a woman. The 27-year-old denies all allegations.

In February 2023, a then 24-year-old woman told police in the Val-de-Marne region southeast of Paris that Hakimi had raped her.

“Today an accusation of rape is enough to warrant a trial, even if I dispute it and everything proves it to be false,” Hakimi wrote on social media on Tuesday.

“I will wait patiently for this process, which will allow the truth to come out publicly.”

Hakimi’s lawyer Fanny Colin questioned the woman’s cooperation in the investigation.

“A trial has been ordered on an accusation based solely on the word of a woman who has obstructed all investigations, refused all medical examinations and DNA tests, refused to have her mobile phone examined and refused to name a key witness,” Colin said.

The plaintiff’s attorney, Rachel-Flore Pardo, said her client was relieved to hear the case would go to trial.

She said the judiciary was exemplary in handling the case.

Hakimi attended PSG’s pre-match training on Tuesday and would normally be an automatic selection at right-back for the reigning European champions when they host Monaco at the Parc des Princes with an aggregate lead of 3-2 after the first leg.

Hakimi scored the equalizer at Monaco’s Stade Louis II last week as PSG came back from two goals down to win.

PSG coach Luis Enrique, when asked about Hakimi’s trial at a press conference ahead of the return match on Tuesday, said: «This matter is in the hands of the authorities.»
