Chap. 28 – Endangered echoes and frogs

Most of us had an early morning out of camp and we all did different versions of the trail. Marathon didn’t sleep a wink, so he packed his bags and left the camp at 3 in the morning. Coyote barely slept, so he left at 4 in the morning. Boostie left around 5:15 and I left at 5:30. The others slept a little longer!

When I reached the road, Angeles Crest, Boostie was enjoying his breakfast near the picnic table. I went to join him, as he said across the parking area, «So, I owe you a secret tunnel. Do you want to walk down the road and see it?» Absolutely. I love tunnels and I especially enjoy the secret tunnels.

I really enjoyed the tunnel, especially the echo it had. I harmonized with myself and sang Secret Tunnel…obviously. After the tunnel, we passed a closed path. There is a protected habit for the endangered yellow-legged mountain frog along the trail, so we had to hike that stretch anyway.

Some poodle bush along the trail.

When the blue fire ended around the frog closure, the part of the trail we reconnected to had several sections washed out. It felt like Mission Creek again, only at less distance. Thank goodness this part only lasted a third of a mile! Despite it being a short section, it annihilated Boostie and me. At the camp right after we had lunch. I had a tortilla with peanut butter and mini M&Ms. It wasn’t bad at all!

The rest of the day was a little calmer, but we felt exhausted by the sun beating down on us. All I was hoping for was an ice cold Gatorade! When we arrived at the camp, we discovered that Rawhide and Frodo gained magic on the trail just a few minutes after passing by the road. Guess what they got? Gatorade. What a bummer for the rest of us! I guess they were in the right place at the right time.

400 miles down!

At the campsite, the water was quite stagnant, despite comments on FarOut stating that there was good flow. I had to filter some out anyway. At least it was cold! Black flies were swarming the area, so I used my bug net all night until I went up to my tent. Marathon asks to borrow my mosquito net for the night, since he sleeps under an open tarp. Hopefully they’ll leave him alone once the sun sets!
