I’m a disaster at hitchhiking – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 110

Galehead Hut was great. The cabins are expensive, but not that bad when you consider all the benefits. I got two large meals, a bed, and two days of luggage. After the hearty breakfast of eggs, pancakes and oatmeal, we were off.

A steep climb up South Twin Mountain had me sweating profusely. My body gets very hot on the climbs. I may have already mentioned this and I apologize if I did. But it’s almost ridiculous. My crazy oven saved me from freezing in February and March. Now it’s just another challenge. Fortunately, the peaks are cool and windy.

Coming down from South Twin we had a lot of ups and downs with a constant descent for about five miles. Another steep descent followed, landing at Zeeland Falls Hut. Until now, the cabins have provided fresh, cold mountain water, without the hassle of filtering it. After resting, with the bottles full, we set off.

Six miles of slow ascent and two miles of moderately steep descent brought us to Crawford Notch. Getting to the AMC Highland center was quite a challenge. In fact, most drivers sped up when we tried to hitchhike. Finally, a couple coming out of the parking lot gave us a ride.

AMC Highland Center was really a great deal. All you could eat (a lot of it) breakfast, dinner and a bed. If we had had a full complement of six people, it would have been cheaper than some hostels.

Despite not packing and stockpiling food from the city, I’m starting to lose weight. This is worrying.
