Norway scored the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England in Miami on Saturday, with Andreas Schjelderup breaking through England’s defence.
Schjelderup was on the left side of the English penalty area in the 36th minute and he struck the ball square. The attempt looked like a cross towards Erling Haaland through the middle, but the ball crept into the goal at the far post.
The 22-year-old plays for Portuguese side Benfica and had a breakthrough year last season, scoring 11 goals and providing a further six assists. He moved to the team in 2024 and scored 15 goals in 83 games. The club currently has a €100 million release clause in place for him, highlighting the importance placed on the winger.
His professional career started with Danish side Nordsjaelland, for which he made 94 appearances in two spells. His youth career was divided between Nordsjaelland and Norwegian Bodo/Glimt.
For Norway, this was only his second goal in his 19th appearance. He also played for the Under-15, Under-19 and Under-21 sides for his country.
However, Norwegian was also in the news for the wrong reasons last year. In November 2025, he was convicted of sharing a sexual video of a minor on a social media platform. He was given a suspended prison sentence of two weeks for this offense.
