Portugal have announced Jorge Jesus as their new head coach following the departure of Roberto Martinez following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Jesus was last in charge of Al Nassr, where he won the Saudi Pro League in his final season. This is his first stint in charge of a national team.
Under Jesus’ predecessor Roberto Martinez, Portugal won the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League, but were eliminated in the 16th round by Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The country was also eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championships.
The arrival of Jesus will likely raise questions about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future. The 41-year-old had indicated the 2026 World Cup would be his last, but Ronaldo and Jesus share a close relationship, having recently worked together at Al Nassr.
