Juventus hires Carnevali as CEO after Comolli leaves

Juventus have hired Giovanni Carnevali, a key figure in the success of tiny Sassuolo, as CEO and managing director following the departure of Damien Comolli following a poor season.

After a board meeting on Friday, Juventus said that Frenchman Comolli, former sporting director at both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and ex-president of Toulouse, “will end his tenure at Juventus by mutual agreement”.

Replacing Comolli will be 65-year-old Carnevali, whose leading role in player development and trading as CEO since 2014 has made Sassuolo a fixture in Serie A.

“I am proud and honored to join a club with such a rich history and strong identity,” said Carnevali.

“Together with all parts of the organization, we will work to ensure that Juventus remains a leading force at both domestic and international levels.”

Comolli was sacrificed by Juve after just one season due to transfer clashes with coach Luciano Spalletti, who was given a contract extension until 2028 in April, and disappointing performances in both Serie A and Europe.

Spalletti was hired to secure a place in the Champions League following the sacking of Igor Tudor in October, but the Turin giants finished sixth and will play in the Europa League.

Juve were knocked out of the Champions League by Galatasary in the play-offs last year, 7-5 on aggregate.
