Manchester United confirm Ugarte’s knee injury after World Cup defeat in Uruguay

Manchester United have confirmed that Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered knee ligament damage during the World Cup defeat to Spain.

Ugarte was stretchered off the pitch in the first half after awkwardly turning during a tackle in the build-up to Spain’s winning goal in Guadalajara.

The 25-year-old held his head in his hands as he left the pitch and reports suggest he could be sidelined for several months.

Ugarte was assessed by Uruguay’s medical staff on Saturday and will now travel to Manchester for further tests.

«Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group match against Spain,» the Premier League club said on Sunday.

“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and rehabilitation time.

“Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will support him every step of the way.”

Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford is in doubt after he failed to feature for Michael Carrick’s team following the defeat to Leeds in April.

He joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and has scored two goals in 69 appearances in all competitions.
