Lionel Messi scored from a free kick in the 80th minute during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and Jordan in Dallas on Saturday, setting a unique record.
The 39-year-old has now scored in seven consecutive World Cup matches, surpassing the record held by Frenchman Just Fontaine and Brazilian Jairzinho.
The streak started with the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Messi scored in the 35th minute. He then scored penalties in the quarter-final and semi-final against the Netherlands and Croatia respectively.
In the final against France, Messi converted again from the spot before adding another in extra time.
The goalscoring streak continued in the current edition as Messi bagged a hat-trick against Algeria to start the campaign. He followed that up with a brace against Austria, which also helped him break German Miroslav Klose’s all-time goalscoring record.
With his free kick against Jordan, Messi took his World Cup goals to 19.
