Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic scored after 10 seconds on Saturday to secure a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Lecce in Serie A, moving his side into provisional third place and consolidating its grip on a Champions League qualifying spot.
The victory takes Luciano Spalletti’s side to 68 points, one point above AC Milan, who host Atalanta on Sunday, and four points ahead of fifth-placed AS Roma, who visit Parma.
Only two full rounds remain once the weekend schedule is completed.
For Lecce, the result means that the country is not yet out of the woods in its battle to avoid the fall. It is 17th, four points ahead of last-place Cremonese, who play Pisa on Sunday. Bottom side Pisa and Hellas Verona have already been relegated.
Vlahovic broke the deadlock at the Stadio Via del Mare with Juve’s fastest league goal since records began in 2004.
After knocking down Andrea Cambiaso’s cross from the left, the Serbian forward maneuvered past three markers and fired a shot into the roof of the net from close range.
The visitor dominated much of the match and was twice denied a second goal due to VAR intervention. However, despite Juventus creating several chances to extend their lead, Vlahovic’s early goal was enough to secure the points.
«The most important thing was the result. We got the three points, we definitely have to win the remaining two games,» Vlahovic said. Sky Sports Italy.
«It was all in our hands. If we win the remaining games, there is nothing anyone else can do about it. We know what is at stake so we have to go out and win,» he added.
Spalletti expressed his frustration at Juventus’ inability to get the points earlier.
«We’ve been saying for a while that we’re going to keep doing this, scoring early and then not finishing the games. It’s like cutting and pasting previous mistakes,» he said.
«A game like this can’t end 1-0. We barely let them get into our half. There were so many situations where we had two attacking options and always went for the third worst option. That’s just how we are.»
