Switzerland and Colombia were tied 0-0 after the end of regular time in their Round of 16 match in Vancouver on Tuesday.
The match will involve 30 minutes of extra time and if no clear winner emerges, a penalty shootout will decide which team will play the quarter-final against Argentina.
Switzerland have gone through the penalty shootout six times in all competitions and won only once.
Only once has it gone this far in a World Cup match, in 2006 against Ukraine, and they lost 0-3.
