The hydration break – which arrives at the 22nd minute of each half – was introduced by FIFA ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to protect players from the prevailing heat in venues across North America. A week into the tournament, it appears to be doing more than just helping the players cool down.
Over the first 28 matches of the tournament, players have spent a combined 184.1 on these water breaks, listening to coaches and catching their breath. The 56 hydration breaks took more than three hours of race time.

What was expected to be just a welfare measure also turns out to influence the course of the match.
56 of the 89 goals scored in the tournament so far have come after hydration was interrupted, with 19 coming within 10 minutes of the restart. Eight of those (19) goals came minutes after the first cooling break, while another eleven came after the second break.

In Norway’s 4–1 win over Iraq, Erling Haaland scored his team’s opening minutes after the first hydration break, before Leo Ostigard added the team’s third after the second-half break. Scot John McGinn scored the winner against Haiti two minutes after the first break. Vinícius Júnior equalized for Brazil against Morocco within 10 minutes of the players returning to the pitch in the hot and humid conditions of the Metlife Stadium.
Elsewhere the trend has continued. The United States scored its second goal against Paraguay in the 31st minute, shortly after the first intermission, while Sweden’s second goal against Tunisia arrived in the 30th minute. Switzerland opened their account against a determined Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 74th minute of the Group B match, before scoring another three to secure a 4-1 win.

Whether these fractures are responsible for the results will be up for debate. But coaches have quickly recognized the tactical possibilities they offer.
«It was very important that we change a few things after the second hydration break, because then the opponent cannot react immediately,» Swiss coach Murat Yakin said after the match in Bosnia and Herzegovina. «Maybe that was the lead we had. We brought in really fast players, and our opponent couldn’t run (with them), and that created gaps at the rim. That was my strategy. I waited until halftime.» Substitutes Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas scored three goals to change the color of the match.
Others, however, were less enthusiastic. South African coach Hugo Broos argued after his side’s draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta’s indoor arena that stoppages disrupt the rhythm of a match. “I think it’s very useful when it’s hot,” Broos said. «If you are the best team at that moment and you are dominating, suddenly your dominance is blocked for five minutes or I don’t know how long. In that stadium (Atlanta Stadium) we don’t have to drink after twenty minutes.»
The breaks also create lucrative commercial opportunities for the broadcasters. FIFA’s rules effectively allow broadcasters two minutes and forty seconds of advertising time during each drinks break, adding more than five minutes of commercial inventory per match.
