Tottenham sign Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for a club record £85 million.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a club record fee of £85 million ($113.4 million), the two Premier League clubs announced on Thursday.

The 21-year-old, who joined West Ham in 2025, moves to London after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League.

Fernandes becomes the latest addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad as the Italian continues to transform Spurs after the club narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last season.

“Spurs are a huge club and the head coach was a big part of why I decided to join,” said Fernandes.

“When we spoke, it was very special.

“We look at football in the same way and take to the field as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try to win every match,” he added.

Fernandes first moved to England with Southampton in 2024 after coming through Sporting Lisbon’s academy. He made his senior Portugal debut in April but missed out on Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad.

“I have admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play,” said De Zerbi.

“Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level.

“Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can bring the ball forward, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments.

«I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and I am happy to be working with him,» the Italian added.
